'And finally, not everyone’s being doing topical. In fact, here’s the rather lovely 6 Oxgangs Avenue devoted to the history of the development of the area, this week highlighting how the block of flats came into being. Could have been prompted by Who do you think you are? Or just a timely reminder that not everything worth blogging about is in the here and now.'

Woolworths

When we began to get a wee bit older and into our early teens, between the years of 1969 and 1972, we took regular adventures beyond Oxgangs and into town. A regular trip was to Woolworths at the east end of Princes Street - alas, no more. Part of the reason for our visit was to buy some cheap gold crucifixes - more of the reason for that idiosyncrasy in a future blog.

We had some brilliant fun and many laughs. There was a cafe within Woolies on the first floor where we would treat ourselves to a plate of chips and a drink. Afterwards we would see who could be the most daring, making up confections or cocktails from the array of condiments on the table - we would mix these together - some salt, pepper, sugar and vinegar and knock it back! A regular feature was to crowd into the photo-booth within the store for a photograph - much fun and hilarity as we all tried to squeeze in!

It would be good to hear other residents or followers of the blog's memories of 'Woolies' circa 1970 -also check out Nanci Griffith's rather lovely Love at the Five and Dime which references Woolworths and the journey through life from there.
